calabaza gigante. Sus hojas y raíces calan
cubriendo todas las laderas, penetrando
llanos, creando bosques en donde los
pájaros hacían sus nidos y el lagarto se escurria. Donde la orquídea se enroscaba en
los troncos de árboles duros como el ausubo y el guayacan. Donde el flamboyan
florecía en copos de sangre cerca del junquillo y el bambú que se abria paso en un mar
de cohitres multicolores. Alll, pegada a los troncos, la planta araña, tirando sus hijos al
vacío junto a un millar de flores de mil colores donde las abejas libaban su miel y las
columnas de hormigas pasaban cercanas a los interminables túneles por donde el
comején se ocultaba. Jurakán y Yucahů se sintieron paralizados ante tanta belleza. Y
esperaron a recobrar sus fuerzas porque la noche comenzaba a cubrirlo todo. Pero la
montaña no dormía, de su cuerpo salían las voces del grillo, la chicharra y el coqui que
iniciaban su concierto. El grito ronco del múcaro, el chillido largo del murciélago y los
cientos de miles de luces del cucubano. Al amanecer, los despertó el vuelo ligero del
guatibirí que anunciaba la mañana con su canto imperioso de guerrero triunfante. Se
prepararon para el ascenso. Uno trepo por la izquierda; el otro, por la derecha.
