Happy Monday!! Sharing this look I wore in NYC a few weeks ago! So in love with this coat from Sentaler (both Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton wear this brand a lot). I spotted pink and had to have it!!

Keep reading, I have a question for my brunette followers!

Pretty much my entire life I haven’t worn black that often because I felt like my hair blended in with it. I would always grab a soft neutral like a cream or beige because I loved the contrast of my dark hair to the soft hue. However, this year I’ve finally gotten over thinking I look bad in black because my hair blends and have embraced wearing the dark shade more than I ever have before. Have you brunettes ever thought the same way as I did with your hair getting lost in what you’re wearing so you shy’d away from it?? I don’t know what made me decided to start wearing black more but I’m glad I did because it’s such a striking and flattering color!!

  1. My brunette hair is not AS DARK AS YOURS, BUT I WEAR BLACK ALL THE TIME. PROBABLY 3-4 DAYS PER WEEK AT WORK. MY BRUNETTE HUSBAND LITERALLY WEARS BLACK EVERYDAY, AKIN TO STEVE JOBS, HIS OUTFIT IS THE EXACT SAME EVERYDAY. EVERY. SINGLE. DAY! HE IS THE VP OF HIS ENGINEERING FIRM AND IT WORKS SO WELL FOR HIM BECAUSE HIS FLATTERING BLACK SHIRT AND CHINO PANTS FITS INTO EVERY SITUATION HE EXPERIENCES, FROM THE LAB TO THE BOARD ROOM. YOUR STYLE IS IMPECCABLE, YOUR HAIR IS LOVELY, AND ITS THE CONFIDENCE THAT WEARS THE CLOTHES!

  2. This is just my personal opinion, so feel free to ignore it, but looking through your older photos you can see when your hair used to be a lighter shade of brown, and to me, that was a much more flattering color on you. Also, please please please look at your hair when it’s tucked into your coat like this. This would be SUCH a flattering length of hair for you. It’s still a long style, but so much prettier.

And finally to answer your question, you look great in black. I much prefer your style when you’re wearing darker clothes. I skip past all the beige outfits.

  3. First of all, i have to reiterate how amazing it was to have met you in palm beach! Seriously a dream come true! I treasure the pictures i have of us and will most likely have them framed. haha! I also dm’ed them to you on instagram. best day ever!! <3

to answer your question, yes, i have felt that way sometimes. i feel like it's all about balance as far as the outfit goes, and you do a great job of giving an all black look a small pop of color, or making it look so chic that i don't even think about your hair getting lost in the outfit. i've always loved seeing you in black, it's so classic and flattering and you pull it off so well. If you can rock black as a dark brunette, then so can i!

  4. I love wearing black. what is your opinion of brown? it is difficult color to find but i was wondering how you feel about brunettes with brown. somehow i feel like black is more flattering.

    1. I know you’re not asking for my opinion, but I just loathe the color brown for clothes. I’m not even sure why. I think I overdosed on it in the 90s.

  5. I am brunette and black has always been my favorite color. You look great in black! I think your dark hair and a dark top frame your face and draw attention to your pretty face. 😊

  6. Hi rach!
My hair is the same color as yours- I’m from Boston where we wear black ALLLL the time, but I agree I always felt too “witchy” if I didn’t wear the color just right. I usually avoid wearing head to toe black unless it’s a dress for this reason! And Also I wear a bright lip or more neutral makeup to off-set it! Hope this helps! XO Ashli

  7. I loved reading your thought process about black – it’s so interesting to me to learn how others view and think about fashion! I never worried about black blending with my hair – I’m a brunette, but my shade is a touch lighter than yours -think dark chocolate :). However, I do shy away from all-black looks because I feel like they are too dark overall with my dark hair -I feel funereal :). I do love black as one piece of an outfit, though, as you’ve done here – especially the way you lightened it up with the blush shade. That’s such a stunning combo!

  8. YESSSS! I always feel that way because my hair is black. I’ve never truly gotten over it – I like to stick to other colors more than wearing black for the exact same reason. Normally i will end up pulling my hair back and wearing statement earrings instead!

  9. I have a very dark pixie, and bc of my bangs I don’t WEAR my black frame sunglasses bc they blend in with my hair. I always grab my silver rimmed aviators bc I love the high contrast. However no one will part me from black clothes. I love them. And HONESTLY, black is my best color. I glow when I wear it. Even if my hair were longer I would Wear black.

  10. I have dark hair and black is my go to color.. I love it! You can never go wrong wearing black. Adding a pop of color to it looks great too:)

  11. I’m LOVING this blush coat with those boots, Rach! To answer your question, YES! YES! YES! My hair is so dark brown that it looks black so I don’t wear a lot of black without a layer of color or prints on top so my hair doesn’t blend in. Funny you should ask because I was cleaning out my email last week and came across a lot of your old emails (from subscribing to your blog) and your hair color from 2013-2014 is so BEAUTIFUL! If you’re thinking of changing your hair up, I’d go back to that color and do a long bob! I think you’d look great! if you’re scared, remember hair grows back! And this is coming from someone who had her hair down to the small of her back and did a Victoria Beckham cut!

  12. That’s such an interesting question, I have dark hair, but that thought has never, ever occurred to me. I hate to reinforce a stereotype about my city, but being born and raised in New York where dark colors are pretty much de rigueur is probably the reason why lol. Now that you mention it I do see your point, but I wouldn’t sweat it; you look great in black.

  13. I Have dark brown hair and have felt The same way! Although it does seem like Lighter colors contrast better with my hair – then it seems like they wash out my pale skin!! So i wear black and i wear white and all the colors inbetween because i love them all! You’re constantly a style inspo In all shades ❤️

  14. I don’t have brunette or black hair, but I do have red hair, and that causes me to avoid wearing A LOT of colors. I used to be really scared of wearing pink because my mom told me it would clash with my hair, but in the past few years I’ve discovered how much I love wearing blush tones, and have said “screw it!” to the “rules” and wear what makes me happy. :) Love this look on you!

  15. I have always felt the exact same waY! Dark hair & black on top do not mix! Blondes look tremendous in black, but as a dark haired brunette I stay away from it. I just feel like contrasting with your hair to avoid it blending is the way to go, much more flattering. CONVERSELY brunettes look fantastic in certain colors more than blondes (white, pink, red). I’ve just accepted that. Also, BLACK DRAINS THE BLOOD FROM MY FACE TOO!

  16. I think you look great in black. My only comment is that you might not feel lost in the lack of contrast between your hair and your clothes if your hair was shorter and had more movement. It’s only hair, it will grow back. Give it a try! And I looooove the Sentaler coats. Total coat porn :)

  17. You are not alone! I have hair maybe a tad darker than yours and have never felt 100% confidence with wearing all black!! <3

  18. love this look rach!I also love sentaler (kate middleton and meghan markle are such amazing women!) following up to your question lol…i actually have red hair and this is a problem for me as well! I used to hhhhhate wearing anything red….hate. but this year as red has been the hot color i have loved wearing it and actually found that it looks kinda good! when i read about you and black…i was like omg i’m not the only one that thinks its bad… the color contrast thing?! haha. anyways, i think you look stunning, in black! and this madewell top..ahh keep with the black gf!

  19. I also have very dark hair and have always felt the same way. I love wearing black, so sometimes I find adding a fun lip colour or cute silk neck scarf helps to break it up a bit for me.

  20. Obsessed with this coat! I love when you wear it! I am naturally a brunette, though it wasn’t as dark as yours, and I wore/still wear a lot of black. I think it looks fine. It’s funny because now I’ve been coloring my hair red and at first I was afraid to wear red but I got over that quick.

  21. It’s so funny that you say this – i have light brown/ auburn hair but am super pale, so i rarely wear nude shades unless i have a spray tan, because I feel like my face blends into my tops!

  22. Not at all! My hair is dark brown (maybe a shade or two lighter than yours) and i always liked the way black makes my blue eyes pop!

  23. You look incredible in this outfit!!! I have dark brown hair and love to wear black. It’s so chic. And not that you were asking any of us, but please don’t listen to the comments about cutting your hair. Yes in theory it should grow back, but sometimes it’s just not the same!!! I also have stolen your Soar liner and snob lipstick combo and get so many compliments. xoxo thanks for all your inspo, style, fitness and otherwise.

  24. yeesss!! I HAVE FELT THE SAME AS YOU. i HAVE DARK HAIR AND IN LOW LIGHT PICTURES, SUCH AS DINNER I SOMETIMES FELT LIKE I LOOKED LIKE A FLOATING FACE.ha! BUT….SEEING YOU, LOOKING CHIC IN ALL BLACK HAS MADE ME GET OVER IT! iT REALLY DOES LOOK BEAUTIFUL. PLEASE DON’T CHANGE YOUR HAIR COLOR. IN A WORLD OF BEAUTIFUL BLONDES, YOU INSPIRE ME TO KEEP MY DARK HAIR AND BE DIFFERENT.

  25. I think that it really depends on the lighting your in, that makes it look like your hair is blending into what you wear.
In these images it appears as if your hair is dark brown. I love these these images and the coat are to die for!
